Recovering the Root Password


Steps to Recovering Root Password from Juniper Devices:

  1. Reboot the device.
  2. Connect the management like laptop or desktop device to Juniper device with rolled over cable and RJ-45–to–DB-9 serial port adapter tp the console port of Juniper Device.
  3. Restart the device.
  4. Start Hyperterminal session by selecting suitable COM port.
  5. When the following prompt appears, press the Spacebar to access the router’s bootstrap loader command prompt:

Depending on your device hardware, the bootstrap loader might proceed quite quickly at this step without pausing for input. Therefore, you might need to press the spacebar multiple times at the beginning of the boot sequence.

Hit [Enter] to boot immediately, or space bar for command prompt.

Booting [kernel] in 9 seconds...

6.     Type boot -s to enter into single user mode.

7.     At the following prompt, type recovery to start the root password recovery procedure.

8.     Enter full pathname of shell or 'recovery' for root password recovery or RETURN for /bin/sh: recovery

9.     Enter Cli mode and set new password using command.

10.  user@host# set system root-authentication plain-text-password.

11.  Set New Password.

12.  Commit the configuration.

13.  Reboot the router again and test the new password once login prompt appears.
